Hiromi "The Trio Project"
Hiromi "The Trio Project" June 20, 2014 Royal Theatre.
Once a generation, somebody comes along to redefine the parameters of creative musical virtuosity; it happened a decade ago when Japanese composer and pianist Hiromi burst upon the jazz scene. In both musicianship and genre-spanning compositional boldness, the electrifying Hiromi achieves startling levels of complexity and sophistication. Her debut album, Another Mind, was a global hit – but one whose sales were surpassed by subsequent recordings such as Brain and Beyond Standard. Soon welcome in the most rarefied circles of modern jazz, Hiromi was winning innumerable awards at the same time as she was performing and recording with such superstars as Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. (Hiromi was a featured member of Stanley Clarke’s newest band when they practically blew the roof off of the Royal Theatre at the 2010 JazzFest.) After going through a period of recording and performing on solo piano, Hiromi again expanded her sonic range with her Trio Project with 2011’s Voice followed by 2013’s Move. The Trio Project features two first-call veterans – bassist Anthony Jackson and drummer Simon Phillips. This super trio has been galvanizing concert halls ever since.
“She’s to the piano what Hendrix and Van Halen are to the guitar. Yeah, she’s that good” – allaboutjazz
